In 1996, a group of concerned citizens in Grady County formed the Grady County Transportation Task Force to look for funding to provide public transportation for Grady County. This task force approached Washita Valley Community Action Council to become the lead agency to apply for federal funding for public transportation in Grady County.
Washita Valley Community Action Council wrote the grant for federal funding for a public transportation system in Grady County. The federal grant application was approved for federal funding to begin operation of a public transit system for Grady County in October 1997. The Washita Valley Community Action Council Transit System for Grady County was named Washita Valley Transit.
Washita Valley Transit began transporting passengers in January 1998 with two new buses and two new radio systems. The Grady County Commissioners gave Washita Valley Transit office space with paid utilities, and a fenced parking area for the buses. With the growth of Washita Valley Transit, the dispatch office was moved to the agency’s main office at 205 W. Chickasha Ave.
Washita Valley Transit started with two buses in 1998. As of December 2005, we have a vehicle roster that includes one 10-passenger bus, two 12-passenger buses, five 14-passenger buses, three 7-passenger vans, and one 15-passenger van.
